Socket Screws: a beginner’s guide

Strength, precision and reliability for every application — what socket screws are, why they outperform traditional screws, and how to choose the right type and material.
PTS By the PTS technical team· Updated June 2026· 6 min read

When you’re working on machinery, vehicles or a precision build, the fasteners you choose decide how durable and secure the finished assembly will be. By the end of this guide you’ll know exactly which socket screw suits your job — and how to specify it with confidence.

Key takeaways
  • The internal hex drive gives more torque, less slip and a compact head vs slotted or Phillips.
  • Three everyday types: cap (strength), set (locking on a shaft) and button (low-profile).
  • Pick the material for the environment — A2 (304) general, A4 (316) marine, alloy for max load.
  • Every PTS socket screw ships with certification and traceability, same-day before 16:30.

What is a socket screw?

Socket screws are among the most versatile fasteners in manufacturing, construction and engineering. Their defining feature is the internal hexagonal drive — often called an Allen or hex drive. Compared with slotted or Phillips heads, that design gives greater torque control, far less slipping and a more compact head profile, all critical advantages in demanding assemblies.

Why choose socket screws?

Because the key engages six internal faces, the driving force spreads evenly — so you can apply more torque without chewing up the tool or the head. The result is higher clamping force, less cam-out and a more reliable joint. Socket screws are the natural choice where vibration, heavy load or tight access rule out other fasteners: industrial machinery, vehicles, robotics and precision jigs.

Engage six faces instead of two, and the force spreads evenly — more torque, less wear, a joint you can trust.

Common head types

Socket Cap

Cylindrical head with high tensile strength and a clean finished look.

Best for · structural & mechanical assemblies

Socket Set (grub)

Headless design that locks a component onto a shaft without protruding.

Best for · gears, pulleys & collars

Button Head

Dome-shaped, low-profile head — lighter clamp load, neater appearance.

Best for · lightweight & visible fixings

Choosing the right head first makes specifying the size, grade and length far simpler.

Choosing the right material

Match the grade to the environment, not just the load:

MaterialWhy pick itTypical use
A2 (304) stainlessGood all-round corrosion resistance, non-magneticGeneral indoor & outdoor
A4 (316) stainlessAdded molybdenum resists salt & chemicalsMarine, coastal, chemical
Alloy steel (12.9)Maximum tensile strength for heavy loadsHigh-stress machinery
Drive standard
DIN 912 / ISO 4762
Stainless grades
A2 (304) & A4 (316)
Size range
M1.6 → M24

Using them effectively

For best results, pair each screw with a correctly sized hex key and clean, dry threads so you reach an accurate torque setting. In assemblies exposed to constant vibration, add a thread-locking compound or a wedge-locking washer. If full traceability matters, order against a specific batch and add a material certificate — both are available on every PTS order.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a cap screw and a set screw?
A cap screw has a cylindrical head that clamps two parts together; a set (grub) screw is headless and locks a part onto a shaft from the side. Use cap screws for joints, set screws for fixing collars, gears and pulleys.
A2 or A4 stainless — which do I need?
A2 (304) suits most general indoor and outdoor uses. Choose A4 (316) wherever salt, moisture or chemicals are present — marine, coastal or process environments — for noticeably better corrosion resistance.
Do PTS socket screws come with certification?
Yes — you can select a material certificate (PMI or 3.1) at checkout and view batch numbers and country of origin for full traceability. It’s part of our Cert Project and unique to PTS.
